Drawings

Ellen and Sam always carry a pen or pencil around because of their obsessive need to draw.

Their approach to drawing is completely different. Ellen is a living scanner who is able to draw very literal and realistic, but her subject matter can be fictional. Sam's drawing style is more expressive.
He uses aggressive lines and he uses a lot of explosive colors, this combination gives his work a childlike quality.
Combine these two styles and you arrive at a very balanced picture, an image that is dynamic and static at the same time.

Sketchbook
Both Ellen and Sam are artists who use a sketchbook as their tool to start a process. They use a sketchbook as a diary to translate the complicated world around them. These sketches are the main inspiration source for their other work. As Samonelle they decided to share the sketchbook for their ideas as an artist duo. Ellen and Sam see their sketchbook as a way of life and not only as an art piece.

Installations

The installations of Samonelle are inspired by the drawings and sketchbooks. They feel the need to fill an entire space and that makes looking at their work a complete experience. In these installations they also experiment with movements by adding performances in the installation. Samonelle estranges the audience with these constructions because of their absurd nature. They play with human connection, expectations, time and space.

Performances

The performances of Samonelle are based on their visual artwork. These artworks are then used as a setting for improvisation theater. However, the performances are evolving more towards an abstract concept as seen in the installations where movement, time and space are more important than dialogue. Now they see their performances as an extension of their installations.
